It is unfortunately, the season for sun burns.  Most people I know love to use fresh aloe or the gels found in most stores as their solution to the problem.  Queen Bee has always used aloe in our hand creams after we discovered that it allows our heavy duty creams to sink into the skin more quickly.
Over the weekend, John and the Queen Bee &#8220;missed&#8221; a few spots as we worked in the garden and relaxed out on the boat.  As we floated, Queenie started to wonder why.   How is it that aloe can take the sting out of the suns burning effects.
After much research, we found that aloe (aloe barbadensis) contains over 200 active components!  The reason is that it treats pain associated with burns is an aspirin-like compound.  It also contains cortizone-like sterols which treat acute inflammation without side effects.  Another ingredient called Gibberellin is a fascinating plant hormone contained in aloe which increases protein synthesis and lectin (which aids in collagen activity).  In the aloe plant, it helps tell the cells when to reproduce, flower, go dormant, etc.  It can also be used to help seeds sprout!  It doesn&#8217;t seem like a big leap to infer that that is one way aloe helps wounds and accelerate cellular generation so you can heal faster.
Okay, so that is a lot of science but it is easy to remember.  You can feel good when you slather on the aloe.  Use it alone or with a friend, but know that you are doing your skin a service anytime you do.  In the Queen Bee&#8217;s product line, you will find aloe in almost everything we make.  It is in high doses in:  Hydrate chemical free moisture, Butta gardener&#8217;s hand cream, Bizzy Bee crafters cream, Crack Cream, Tamanu Masque, in our organic body and facial washes, and shave bar soaps to name a few.

Many women think nothing of spending ten to fifteen minutes applying makeup.  Yet, research shows that we are only spending about twenty seconds cleaning their face and often missing our neck and decollete.  All year, but especially during the summer months we are exposing our skin to layers of dirt and debris.  Some of this is environment  pollutants and some are skin care, spf and just the sebum our skin produces to keep our barrier healthy.  Can you imagine how this is contributing to dulling your skin’s appearance, as well as clogging and congestion?
Often the reason, is that we are tired after a long day and don&#8217;t want to create a mess before bed.  A quick cleanse though can make you feel good.  Like a good brushing on your teeth and gums before bed.  Even the scents can help trigger that it is time to relax.  Like with diet, we make choices throughout the day.  Think of it as as a way to ensure you are going to have a good skin day in the future!
While estheticians might suggest a double cleanse is needed each day, to remove oils and build up.  We feel good about recommending our Glycolic Tonic.  It&#8217;s a very mild skin cleanser using approximately 2% glycolic to chemically exfoliate the skin.  There is a tiny amount of witch hazel to dissolve dirt and grime.  Super quick.  Just apply a few drops to cotton and wipe.  If you can see residue on the cotton, repeat.  The light bulgarian lavender scent should help you get in the mood for a lovely dreamy sleep. If you feel a warm sensation just splash a little cool water.  Off to bed you go.  You will wake up refreshed and your skin will be glowing.

Many of you Queen Bee Sauce fans know that we work hard to be green.  We recycle all the materials that our vendors ship us.  We reuse packing materials and shred paper.  The Queen composts with worms and mulch piles.  We don&#8217;t produce lots of printed marketing materials and send out paper mailers and catalogs.  Our products are produced for retail without extra layers of packaging.  Our products are made with attention to the source of each ingredient to ensure we are walking lightly on this green earth.
If you haven&#8217;t already considered the reasons to switch to organics in your skin care, let us give you something to ponder&#8230;
Why switch to organic skin care products?
Your skin is your barrier to the world, keeping you safe from bacteria and the elements.  Traditionally formulated skin care products contain chemicals that you wouldn’t consider eating or drinking, yet because we absorb products into our blood stream through our skin (think of a nicotine patch or “the pill”) that is what we are doing.
Take a look in your bathroom to see what ingredients are listed on your favorite products.  They may be new formulations that are healthy, but often you find words like Tricolsan (common in hand sanitizers), Sodium Laurel Sulphate (found in things that foam it is a strong detergent and car degreaser), and five kinds of parabens (linked to breast cancer used as a preservative in lotions) that you might see.  These three top the list of nasty chemicals found in beauty products.  To test your current products look them up for free:  www.cosmeticsdatabase.com
The good news is switching to new products may be an easy way to both save money and go green.  Lots of new small companies create fresh skin care products with attention to the overall health of our consumers.  We make smaller batches and often hand-make our products in order to ensure quality control and eco-conscious choices for sourcing and packaging.  Even the top lines of organic skin care products will be half  the cost of similar products sold through department stores.  They often have better quality ingredients with less glamor packaging.
So as we cherish the bright green grass that our summer storms have delivered, what better way to bring a smile to our faces than start a fresh green sale.
Save some green!  Wednesday - Friday this week only save 15% storewide on all online only sales!
Tread softly in our world eco-systems.  Indulge your skin with the most healthful, nourishing and sweet smelling treats!  Consider making a switch to fresh from the kitchen skin care.  For more information about organic skin products sign up for our blog!  www.QueenBeePagosa.com

In the little town of Pagosa Springs, we take our gardening seriously.  Pagosa Feed &#38; Seed was very selective about carrying our gardener&#8217;s hand cream, but after trying it they were finally convinced.  At first whiff, the lemongrass will convince you to give it a try, but the bug deterring essential oils will keep you coming back.  It has been a popular selling gift item since we introduced it in 2005, but really took off as one of our big success stories after a little story appeared in the Denver Post.
Organic skin care maker Queen Bee created a thich, super hydrating gardener&#8217;s hand cream called Butta.   It is free of chemicals including harmful parabens.  So if you are out and about in Pagosa and want to try a lovely hand cream, pop into Pagosa Feed and Seed (formerly Pagosa Nursery).  It located on Bastille behind Ace Hardware.

REPRINT DECEMBER 2007 STORY
Gardening Just Became a Whole Lot Safer

Say Yes to Beautiful Flower Beds- Say No to Chemical-Laden Lotion
Gardening season is just around the corner, and we know what that means– seriously neglected hands fallen victim to the sun, dirt, bugs and joint stress from minute and repetitive motion. The easy way to remedy gardening woes would be to simply not garden, but if you’re like most, treasuring a fine rose bush or bougainvillea bloom like a rare glass of wine, you need a solution that will keep you outdoors among the plants you love.
Enter Queen Bee Skin Care’s Butta Gardener’s Hand Cream (the color which comes from carrot oil and texture so closely resembled whipped butter it was a crime to moniker this hand cream anything else). After an exhaustive day in the dirt, Queen Bee Skin Care’s founder Lynne Killey could find no product that successfully hydrated and simultaneously soothed her cracked, achy hands. To the kitchen it was, where coconut, palm and mango oils were combined to create the lavish, intensely hydrating Butta.
Queen Bee’s fresh-from-the-kitchen hand creams are full of hydrating butters and oils- without the harmful chemicals found in traditional skin care products; this makes them a safe, pure remedy for overworked gardener hands. Most lotions and creams use a dangerous set of preservative chemicals called parabens (see attached fact sheet). Butta Cream is a natural, healthful solution to using lotions laden with parabens.
The rich oils used in Butta were picked specifically for their individual therapeutic properties (and to avoid nut oils, which often produce allergic reaction).  Coconut oil is readily absorbable and creates smoothness while penetrating deep into the skin&#8217;s layers, strengthening the underlying tissue. Palm oil is known for its’ high level of carotenoids (which are converted to vitamin A in the body). Externally, vitamin A neutralizes harmful elements in the skin, improving infection resistance, skin elasticity and wrinkle depth. Melting quickly upon contact with the skin, mango oil gives Butta Cream a luxurious, heavy-yet-silky feel.
Other scrumptious ingredients added to the oils in Butta create a potion hard to pass up. Cinnamon, lemongrass and lavender oils fragrantly combine, keeping bugs away sans the overwhelming ‘bug-spray’ smell (but beware, this might leave you deeply inhaling your hands). Camphor oil readily soothes aching muscles and joints while aloe quickens healing of sun-drenched skin.
Butta can be used before and after your gardening adventures: before to keep the moisture in and the bugs out and after to ease away the strains of a day in the dirt (it can even be used on your feet during pedicure treatments for spectacular softness). Even with routine usage, one 4 ounce jar will probably last an entire planting season, allowing you to garden ‘til your heart’s content!
Founded in 2004, Queen Bee Sauce offers simple, natural skin care products to health-conscious consumers. With a focus on personalized products and service, all Queen Bee products are homemade, by hand, from scratch, using natural and organic ingredients. The Queen Bee motto ‘Made with Love’ represents the philosophy of founder Lynne Killey that “each bottle or jar of product is made with attention to quality of ingredients, harmony with nature and care for the person who will be using our product.”

<title>Best Skin Care :Queen Bee’s Natural Home Remedies Treat Eczema</title>

Many Americans suffer from eczema it is brought on by stress and extreme dry skin. It is commonly treated with expensive topical steroidal creams such as Protopic and Elidel. These creams, required by the FDA to warn about their potential cancer risk, have been linked to sterility in men and are strongly discouraged by many sources for use on children. Most steroid creams also carry stern warnings about prolonged use.
As with most skin irritations, you want to exfoliate, sooth and moisturize the skin.  Here are some ideas for spot treating the breakout with home-made remedies.
Oatmeal Mask – simply grind quick cooking oats into a fine powder (this makes it easier to work with) and mix with equal parts of a skin friendly oil.  We suggest sunflower or coconut oil.  Apply mask and allow it to rest on the skin for five to 10 minutes to sooth, hydrate and cool the skin.
Cornmeal Scrub – you want to gently exfoliate the area that is suffering a breakout, removing dead skin that traps bacteria.  Combine 1 tablespoon cornmeal, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and one teaspoon of honey.  Mix and use in the shower, gently scrubbing the area.
Hydrating &#38; Soothing Tamanu mask – combine 1 teaspoon of aloe vera with a few drops of tamanu oil.  If you like, add a drop of Sandalwood or Frankincense.  This makes the mask smell lovely and adds to its skin curing soothing properties.  Combine and paint on skin in a thin even level.  You can see the skin change from red to yellow tones as it is applied.
Hydrate – you need to find chemical and perfume free products.  Find something you like to use that is 100% oil or nut butter.  We highly recommend raw shea butter as a organic fresh solution.  It is a nut butter that hasn’t been exposed to high heat or chemicals in the refining process.  It is beige or grey in color and has a slight nutty smell.  You will find it to be very hard at room temperature.  Just warm some in the palm of your hands and use to generously treat the breakout area.  Using this type of undiluted “superfat” will help to ensure that your skin stays hydrated and breakouts can be avoided.   If you live in a dry climate, this would be our daily skin care recommendation.   The other solution that works well for daily hydrate skin in climates that are less dry would be our Tamanu 50/50 blend with golden organic jojoba.  It is easy to apply and can be used be directly on healthy or irritated skin with soothing, cooling and antibacterial goodness.
More on Tamanu
Queen Bee Sauce offers a natural alternative solution. It is a nut oil called Tamanu.  Tamanu Oil (pronounced tah-mah-new), is a dark green nut oil that reduces eczema (Atopic Dermatitis), seasonal dry skin irritation, leaving skin radiant and healthy. The name sounds funny, but it is serious healing business.  From the lush islands of the South Pacific, Tamanu oil is extracted from the Tamanu tree nut.  The fruit of the tree, about the size of an apricot, has a thin flesh and a large nut-hull inside.  Long used by island women to ensure healthy, moisture-rich skin, heal damaged skin, reduce scarring and eliminate redness, this oil found its’ way into the European and US cosmetic markets in the 1920’s and has since been thoroughly researched in hospitals and by independent laboratories world-wide.
The chemical components of Tamanu Oil (calohyplloloids, calophyllic acid, and benzoic and oxi-benzoic acids) have extraordinary abilities to restore and regenerate skin tissue.  Tamanu acts as an antiseptic and astringent with antimicrobial and antiviral properties.  Queen Bee Sauce’s Tamanu Oil is refined by cold pressing in Madagascar, without exposing the nuts to high heat, giving you a fresh and safe skin care solution. Dark green and luxurious, Tamanu Oil is heavy, thick and rich, yet readily absorbs into the skin.

<title>Beauty Skin Care :Secret Weapon to Combat Summer Sun and Home Remedies</title>
		<description>
You already know dangers the sun poses to your skin. Despite our best efforts to cover our skin, someone in your home will probably suffer painful sunburn this summer. If you accidentally stay out in the sun to long, forget to take your sunscreen to the beach, or lose track of time

You already know dangers the sun poses to your skin. Despite our best efforts to cover our skin, someone in your home will probably suffer painful sunburn this summer. If you accidentally stay out in the sun to long, forget to take your sunscreen to the beach, or lose track of time while working in the garden and get burned, you can immediately feel the soothing healing of tamanu oil.  Tamanu can heal your sunburn and ease the discomfort better than anything you have ever tried before.  It starts to heal your burn with the very first drop.  Using our blended Tamanu oil will accelerate real healing.
Queen Bee recommends getting a small bottle of Tamanu 50/50 blend in your medicine cabinet in case you get too much sun exposure during the summer months!  It eases the pain associated with the burning sensation and helps cool the skin quickly to avoid real damage to your important protective barrier!  Full of natural antibacterials and antiviral properties it will help your skin heal and repair more quickly.
The source of tamanu oil only grows in the tropics, so you may not be aware of its magnificent healing powers. The people in Southeast Asia have extracted and used this miracle cure for anything from dry skin to severe burns for hundreds of years.  Due to coverage on the Dr Oz show this spring, it is gaining popularity around the world.
The fruit from the tamanu tree has little black kernels in the center. The seeds are covered with sticky rich oil ready for extraction. At the end of the year, a single tree only yields enough fruit to extract 5 kilograms of this truly miraculous treatment for your skin.
It has been known to heal even severe third degree burns, and will heal sunburn faster than any current remedies on the market.  you will need to apply to the affected area liberally and several times a day.  We encourage our clients to mix with aloe to allow it to penetrate more quickly and topically cool during the application.
Sunburn Home Remedies - for more organic skin care recipes go to http://www.queenbeepagosa.com/recipes.html
Oatmeal Bath:  Coarsely grind 1/2C quick cook oatmeal in a food processor for several seconds.  Add to lukewarm bath water and soak away some of the pain and itchiness created by sunburns.  A few lavender drops will add antiseptic and soothing properties, too.
Cool Cucumber Spray:  Chop up a large cucumber and add to 2 C hot water.  Allow to steep and cool.  Strain out the cucumber “bits” that remain and refrigerate.  This cool water can be used as a cooling spray or on cotton compresses to sooth a burned area.  Add only one drop of peppermint to increase the cooling properties.  Add 1 teaspoon of aloe.  Pour into spray bottle and shake vigorously.
So, take our advice&#8230; use plenty of sunscreen and just in case, keep a handy little tamanu vial around the house.  To make it simple and save you a few dollars, we put it on sale this week!  To shop for Queen Bee products go to www.QueenBeeSauce.com.  For more information about treatment and tamanu just give us a buzz!  970/731-3690
