Choosing the right skin care products can be tricky. As the seasons change, so does our skin. Often we have to switch up our routine to address dryness this time of year. (The chart above helps pick the correct Skin Rx for your type of skin.)

At Queen Bee, we try to keep it as simple as possible for you to have clean glowing skin. It is important to exfoliate when skin becomes dry so that we can apply moisture to a fresher, smoother surface. This allows you to use less product and have it be more effective.

For Your Face

If you aren’t already using our Glycolic Tonic, now is the time. It cleans the skin with deeply penetrating AHAs and breaks up the wax-like deposits that hold the dead skin to the surface. You can get a trial size to get you started or the full size will be on sale through the end of the year to encourage that you add this to your winter routine. If you are already using the Clarisonic Mia, congratulations! You are doing a great job of removing surface dirt and debris, but you will still want to add a deeper skin helper that addresses cellular turnover with either glycolic or even stronger Retin A or Tretinoin. You might also want to switch your brush head (Clarisonic suggests every three months) to the new deep pore cleansing brush.

For Your Body

As the cold air arrives and the furnaces and fire kick on, we like to take time to make a little salt scrub to take into the shower. Simply add about 1 tablespoon of kosher (rough) salt to an equal part of any of the Queen Bee body oils Citrus, Spa or Lavender. Stir together in a plastic bowl or cup. Take it with you into the shower and before turning the water on, just give yourself a rough slough all over. When the water hits your skin, you will be thankful that you took a couple minutes for yourself. This scrub is too strong for use on your face, but works great on arms, legs, any rough body skin.

Extreme Moisture

Using 100% hydrating lipids like the Vitamin K Daily Facial Vitamin Serum or the reformulated Sea Buckthorn C Serum is a great way to keep your facial skin happy during the winter. Sometimes, we find that adding a little raw shea butter before outdoor activities protects our cheeks and lips from wind burn and redness. Squalane is also a great addition to winter skin routines as it plumps the skin and allows the moisture to penetrate and be more easily absorbed into the top layers making our faces appear more dewy, smooth, and healthy. If you have questions about what is in the products you use now, just read the labels. If the first ingredient isn’t a moisturizing agent (fat or lipid) then it probably should be used in the summer or humid conditions versus the drying winter months.

We love the snow, but it can be hard on your skin. Try this simple recipe to make a little cream that can be spread on your cheeks before you head outside. It creates both a barrier and it moisturizers with simple pure lipids that are naturally full of vitamins and anti-oxidants. More recipes can be found at http://www.queenbeepagosa.com/recipes.html.

God Save the Cream!

Recipe Simple, Perfect, Organic Hand Cream

Many of you know and love this concoction. I’m sorry to report that we couldn’t keep producing it because of it’s lack luster sales! We are happy to share the recipe though. We think this is a great gift for the holidays. Recipe makes enough for 8 – one ounce jars.

Use equal parts Raw Shea and your favorite nut oil – Soybean works VERY well, but almond, sunflower, or safflower are perfect partners also.

Recipe MAKES 1 Cup or 8 Ounces

1/2 C Raw Shea butter (4 oz)

1/2 C Soybean Oil (4 oz)

Optional Scent: 12 drops Orange, Tangerine, Spearmint, Lavender essential oils

Slowly melt the shea over either a double boiler, radiator, water bath, or in the microwave you can melt in the same way you do chocolate. Small 15 second cycles, stirring in between until it begins to soften.

Then pour in your oil, and stir. Mix in essential oils like Lavender, Citrus or Mint. Stir again

Pour into the containers you want to use. Pop into the freezer until hard. This allows the oils to bind together making your final result smooth. If you skip this step the hand cream will be lumpy and bumpy and make look like cauliflower on the top. Nothing wrong with it, you can remelt, but it looks and feels much more appealing if you follow this last step.

If you are a customer of Queen Bee, you probably already made the connection. We eat through our skin. This morning, while being interviewed for Edible San Juan magazine, the writer said… “imagine each little pore as an open mouth”. It is true. Think of a morphine or nicotine patch, birth control, etc. Taking a bath in epsom salts, your muscles absorb the magnesium sulphate. It is a good analogy to help you become more aware that the toxins that exists in your skin care might be something to replace in your life.

All you need to do is read the labels. If you don’t know what it is, you probably don’t need to use it clean, exfoliate or moisturize your skin. So today, we whipped out a couple old recipes from our archives to help you give your skin a little extra love. (Rhoda, this one is for you!)

Chocolate Souffle

2 teaspoons half & half
1 teaspoon cocoa powder

Combine two parts whipping cream or half & half and one part powdered chocolate (any brand or raw cacao). Use a small whisk or fork. We made a tiny bath by using a dollop of leftover whipping cream and adding stirring in the cacao.

Apply mask with a pastry brush or your fingers. Apply a thick layer. Remove just before it dries. You will notice your skin feels super-clean, tighter and slightly bronzed.

The lactic acid in the cream eats away dead skin. The caffeine in the cocoa tightens and firms the skin leaving a slightly bronzed appearance from the brown color.

Note: The mask gets harder to remove if completely dry, but doesn’t harm the skin in any way. You will want to use a dark wash cloth and lots of water to remove. We like to use this mask in the bath or before a shower so that you can let it dry and wash it away with just water and your hands versus an abrasive towel.

The first set arrived this morning to be used in the Spa. We had already been taking orders for them for about a week, but we are one of the first places to get this new little treats! They retail for and are designed with acne in mind. The bristles are softer, longer for a gentle flexing motion. The ends appear “frayed” but are actually pine cone shaped to grab more sebum and clean pores in a gentle way without over exfoliating the skin. This new brush head is great for teens or anyone who lives in very dry, or high altitude climates and suffers from acne.

For charts about their various models and brush heads. See this post:

All of the brush heads for Clarisonic facial brushes are in stock at Queen Bee and available for sale at www.QueenBeeSkin.com. They include the deep pore cleansing head, body brush, regular replacement heads and the new acne brush head. If you already have a Mia, Clarisonic Pro, Clarisonic Plus or the new Mia 2, this head will just pop on as you are ready to replace.

For more information about Clarisonic brush and brush head models, see this story from last month on them http://www.queenbeepagosa.com/colony/?p=1252.

The holidays are fast approaching, and this means that it is almost time for the 37th annual Civic Club Bazaar that traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season in Pagosa Springs.

Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ross Aragon Community Center
located downtown on Hot Springs Boulevard across from the Post Office

This year, there are 70 booth spaces with more than 70 individuals offering their works including the Queen Bee of organic skin care. In addition to all the artists and crafters from the Pagosa Springs area, participants come to this bazaar from as far away as Arizona, New Mexico and various regions of Colorado. In addition to shopping, the cafe will be back again this year. There will be plenty of room in the cafe area for you to sit down, take a break from your shopping, meet with friends and enjoy a treat. So bring a friend and plan to come spend some time with us!

Want to know more?
We asked event manager and local volunteer Barb Draper to tell us more about Civic Club.

Who is the Pagosa Springs Women’s Civic Club?
Barb Draper: Yes, I love to spread the word about the Civic Club. It is over 100 years old – and the main focus of the group has always been service – early on volunteering and staffing the library, then in the mid70s they started the bazaar as a fundraiser for the library. The bazaar proceeds inlcuding booth rental fees, raffle, silent auction ad cafe profits (after paying the Comm. Ctr. rent) all goes to buy items for the library that its small budget does not provide for. With property value reassessments the library ill be receiving less money than usual as a “special disrict” and their wish list is way up, especially with all the technology opportunities they would like to provide for the community.
Civic Club is a much smaller group than Women’s Club. They meet once a month at the library, and have a speaker on a variety of subjects much like Womens Club, etc. have. They usually have a summer picnic at the Case ranch up Piedra Rd. into Hinnsdale County and an annual Christmas party. A couple of their meetings are focused on plans for the bazaar.
My fear for the group is that it is “aging.” There are only 3 of us in the group under 70. This group really needs some revitalization. We welcome new blood to group. Their purpose is wonderful, and I have been a member almost ever since we moved here 13 years ago. If you are interested in supporting the Pagosa Springs Ruby Sisson library and has some time to spare… give Barb a call after the big Nov 5th event. She can be reached at 731-9979.

Please take a minute to mark your calenders for our 4th annual open hive. We are happy to announce our holiday luncheon celebration. We open the bee hive from 11 – 4pm for an afternoon shopping event with catered lunch and cocktails. We hope you take a lovely fall afternoon and spend it with us. You get to shop local, eat some treats, and toast to another day in the Rocky Mountains.

Some of the other guests will include:

Lovely Jill Phillips and her Russia House Collections. She is off shopping the hills of Russia now, so I am sure we will see some lovely new treats from her.

Lynne Vickerstaff will be showing holiday and everyday wear for the sweet little girls in our lifes. She is the creator of a line of dresses that “grow” with your child. They have unique ribbon/button combinations that allow each hand made dress to change sizes quickly. Her vintage fabrics and twirly skirts make the little girls smile from ear to ear. Little Weedz clothes that grow!

We hope that Annie Jacobi our most talented visual artist will be able able attend. She is an avid decorator and will be showing her collections of wearable art and the new home crosses. However, her loving husband Charlie is still have medical issues that may require her attention. If you have a minute to send her well wishes, we know that she would appreciate that.

The Queen Bee just discovered some very delicious oils and balsamic vinegar blends. It is called Gourmet Blends and Jeanne and Jeanie will be making their way to Pagosa from Boulder with them. Our favorites included the Blood Orange Olive Oil and the Fig Vanilla Balsamic. Yum. We can’t wait for them to see our pretty little town.

Tess Challis is Pagosa’s own talented author and wellness coach. Quintessence (”Tess”) Challis began her holistic health journey in her late teens. After a lifetime of numerous health ailments (including acne, obesity, strep throat, constant illnesses, anxiety, and depression), she found that a vegan diet along with an “inner wellness regime” of meditation and visualization literally made a world of difference. She is going to bring copies of her books and will have a couple items for sale including the delicious Raw Cinnamon Rolls that she demonstrated recently at Pagosa Baking Company using superfoods. If time and space allow she will be doing a free demonstration, too.

The Queen was very excited to find our lovely Lindsey (from Pagosa) has been working as an esthetician in Durango for quite some time now. Her specialty is Lash Extensions. If you have ever wanted to wake up with beautiful long, dark lashes… this might be your chance.

In the city, a full set of lashes costs close to 0, but we are offering our little bee hive for this service on two days the week before the Christmas Holiday on Tuesday Dec 20th and Thursday Dec 22nd. Your appointment for a full set of lash extensions will only cost 0. Lindsay can be reached for questions at 970-946-9816. To book your appointment, get in touch with Queen Bee! Next time we see you, we might just be doe-eyed!

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash Extensions are semi-permanent eyelash extensions. They are single strands of hypo-allergenic synthetic eyelashes curved to replicate a natural lash. Applied one at a time they look like natural eyelashes and give length, curl, and volume. They are perfect for day to day wear as well as special occasions for longer, thicker, luscious and natural looking eyelashes without the hassles of applying and removing mascara.

What are the benefits of wearing lash extensions?

Most women choose Lash extensions to lengthen their natural lashes while others want their lashes to look fuller. Extensions can create a younger appearance on many clients. These semi-permanent eyelash extensions create the appearance of a brighter, more open and rested eye, thereby creating a more youthful and rejuvenated look.

We recommend a full set of eyelash extensions for the initial application and touch ups every two to four weeks. A natural lash typically sheds every two to two and a half months and is replaced with the growth of a new eyelash. Eyelash extensions are applied one-by-one to lashes that are about midway through their growth cycle. Therefore, after two to four weeks, approximately one third of your lashes will have cycled out (depending on your individual lash growth cycle). Therefore touch-ups are considered necessary to lashes that have completed their life cycle.

The main advantage of lash extensions is spending less time with makeup; mascara is certainly no longer necessary. The added benefit is that they look beautiful morning and night, all day, every day. Say goodbye to the application of mascara, stained tears and mascara masks around the eyes. With lash extensions you can look and feel gorgeous from the moment you wake up.

For your appointment time slot, just give us a buzz! 970-316-2899(buzz) or QB@QueenBeeSauce.com
