It is unfortunately, the season for sun burns. Most people I know love to use fresh aloe or the gels found in most stores as their solution to the problem. Queen Bee has always used aloe in our hand creams after we discovered that it allows our heavy duty creams to sink into the skin more quickly.
Over the weekend, John and the Queen Bee “missed” a few spots as we worked in the garden and relaxed out on the boat. As we floated, Queenie started to wonder why. How is it that aloe can take the sting out of the suns burning effects.
After much research, we found that aloe (aloe barbadensis) contains over 200 active components! The reason is that it treats pain associated with burns is an aspirin-like compound. It also contains cortizone-like sterols which treat acute inflammation without side effects. Another ingredient called Gibberellin is a fascinating plant hormone contained in aloe which increases protein synthesis and lectin (which aids in collagen activity). In the aloe plant, it helps tell the cells when to reproduce, flower, go dormant, etc. It can also be used to help seeds sprout! It doesn’t seem like a big leap to infer that that is one way aloe helps wounds and accelerate cellular generation so you can heal faster.
Okay, so that is a lot of science but it is easy to remember. You can feel good when you slather on the aloe. Use it alone or with a friend, but know that you are doing your skin a service anytime you do. In the Queen Bee’s product line, you will find aloe in almost everything we make. It is in high doses in: Hydrate chemical free moisture, Butta gardener’s hand cream, Bizzy Bee crafters cream, Crack Cream, Tamanu Masque, in our organic body and facial washes, and shave bar soaps to name a few.
