Many Americans suffer from eczema it is brought on by stress and extreme dry skin. It is commonly treated with expensive topical steroidal creams such as Protopic and Elidel. These creams, required by the FDA to warn about their potential cancer risk, have been linked to sterility in men and are strongly discouraged by many sources for use on children. Most steroid creams also carry stern warnings about prolonged use.
As with most skin irritations, you want to exfoliate, sooth and moisturize the skin. Here are some ideas for spot treating the breakout with home-made remedies.
Oatmeal Mask – simply grind quick cooking oats into a fine powder (this makes it easier to work with) and mix with equal parts of a skin friendly oil. We suggest sunflower or coconut oil. Apply mask and allow it to rest on the skin for five to 10 minutes to sooth, hydrate and cool the skin.
Cornmeal Scrub – you want to gently exfoliate the area that is suffering a breakout, removing dead skin that traps bacteria. Combine 1 tablespoon cornmeal, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and one teaspoon of honey. Mix and use in the shower, gently scrubbing the area.
Hydrating & Soothing Tamanu mask – combine 1 teaspoon of aloe vera with a few drops of tamanu oil. If you like, add a drop of Sandalwood or Frankincense. This makes the mask smell lovely and adds to its skin curing soothing properties. Combine and paint on skin in a thin even level. You can see the skin change from red to yellow tones as it is applied.
Hydrate – you need to find chemical and perfume free products. Find something you like to use that is 100% oil or nut butter. We highly recommend raw shea butter as a organic fresh solution. It is a nut butter that hasn’t been exposed to high heat or chemicals in the refining process. It is beige or grey in color and has a slight nutty smell. You will find it to be very hard at room temperature. Just warm some in the palm of your hands and use to generously treat the breakout area. Using this type of undiluted “superfat” will help to ensure that your skin stays hydrated and breakouts can be avoided. If you live in a dry climate, this would be our daily skin care recommendation. The other solution that works well for daily hydrate skin in climates that are less dry would be our Tamanu 50/50 blend with golden organic jojoba. It is easy to apply and can be used be directly on healthy or irritated skin with soothing, cooling and antibacterial goodness.
More on Tamanu
Queen Bee Sauce offers a natural alternative solution. It is a nut oil called Tamanu. Tamanu Oil (pronounced tah-mah-new), is a dark green nut oil that reduces eczema (Atopic Dermatitis), seasonal dry skin irritation, leaving skin radiant and healthy. The name sounds funny, but it is serious healing business. From the lush islands of the South Pacific, Tamanu oil is extracted from the Tamanu tree nut. The fruit of the tree, about the size of an apricot, has a thin flesh and a large nut-hull inside. Long used by island women to ensure healthy, moisture-rich skin, heal damaged skin, reduce scarring and eliminate redness, this oil found its’ way into the European and US cosmetic markets in the 1920’s and has since been thoroughly researched in hospitals and by independent laboratories world-wide.
The chemical components of Tamanu Oil (calohyplloloids, calophyllic acid, and benzoic and oxi-benzoic acids) have extraordinary abilities to restore and regenerate skin tissue. Tamanu acts as an antiseptic and astringent with antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Queen Bee Sauce’s Tamanu Oil is refined by cold pressing in Madagascar, without exposing the nuts to high heat, giving you a fresh and safe skin care solution. Dark green and luxurious, Tamanu Oil is heavy, thick and rich, yet readily absorbs into the skin.
